Tigray Front seizes control of Mekelle airport amid escalation with the federal army in northern Ethiopia

The French agency reported that forces of the Tigray People's Liberation Front took control of Mekelle airport, the capital of Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, in a new escalation of renewed confrontations between militants loyal to the front and the federal army, which flared up again late last January amid mutual accusations between the two sides.

This development marks the most serious military escalation in the region since the Pretoria agreement that ended in November 2022 the two-year war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, especially with Addis Ababa suspending all civilian flights to Tigray and reports of drone strikes that killed civilians, amid growing fears of a return to fighting.
